- Карвер, Джордж Вашингтон (1864—1943), учёный-ботаник, родители которого были рабами. Был инвалидом из-за перенесённой в детстве болезни и не мог посещать школу, но учился самостоятельно и получил степень бакалавра. По приглашению Букера Т. Вашингтона возглавил отдел сельскохозяйственных исследований в Институте Таскеги, совершил ряд открытий, в частности, установил роль севооборота в плодородии почв, что способствовало улучшению земледелия на Юге США. Главной его работой были эксперименты с арахисом и бататом (сладким картофелем). Заслуги Карвера были высоко оценены государством: в 1945 Конгресс объявил 5 января днём Джорджа Вашингтона Карвера [George Washington Carver Day], а в 1953 на его родине, вблизи Даймонд-Гроув (штат Миссури) был установлен памятник
